The Ridge at Landour: Pine Resin and First Frost

Free verse observing the sudden descent of autumn mist over the deodar ridges of Landour, where the silence of high altitude outlasts human hurry.

POETRY

At seven thousand feet,
The wind does not blow through the trees;
It sifts through them,
Like cold water through green mesh.

Below the Sisters’ Bazaar,
The deodars stand with their roots dug into grey shale,
Holding the mountain together
With nothing more than patience and amber resin.

I. The Deodar Needles

A single dry pine cone falls.
A hollow knock against slate—
Then forty minutes of unbroken stillness.

You learn here that silence is not the absence of sound.
It is the presence of an immense, listening weight.
The mist comes up from the Doon valley at 4 PM,
Not rising like steam,
But creeping sideways across the limestone cliffs,
Erasing the metal roof of Kellogg Church,
Erasing the mule path,
Leaving only the sharp, medicinal fragrance of bruised needles underfoot.

II. The Slate Roofs

Every roof in Landour is held down by river stones.
Round, smooth granites hauled up from the Yamuna bed
A hundred autumns ago.

They sit upon the corrugated tin,
Cold, moss-dark anchors
Keeping the wind from peeling the house like an orange.

The woodcutter’s pony stops by the stone parapet.
Its breath rises in white feathers against the blue ravine.
It does not turn its head to look at the snow peaks of Swargarohini;
It knows the mountain is there.
Only human beings need to keep looking at what cannot move.

III. The Temperature at Dusk

The sun drops behind the Chakrata hills in thirty seconds,
Leaving a thin, blood-orange bruise along the ridge.

The frost arrives before the stars do—
A quiet, crystalline skin settling over the water butt,
Freezing the yellow maple leaf in place
Until the morning light decides whether to thaw it or let it sleep.
