The Threshold at Dusk

In Old Lucknow's Chowk, dusk arrives as the lime plaster cools along the outer archways. When the heat leaves the stone, elders sit on the dahlīz—the threshold or entrance space between courtyard and lane. On this narrow ledge of stone, conversation slows to the natural cadence of evening.

Ghazal: Dahlīz-e-Shām

Hawaa ke rukh pe thahrī ik nishānī hai
Har ik dahlīz sunātī ik kahānī hai

Makaanon ke naye hain rang-o-roop ab to
Magar dahlīz pe aahat bhī purānī hai

Guzarne de shitābī se zamāne ko
Thahar kar dekh sukhan mein ik rawānī hai

Nahīñ lāzim ki har ik baat kahī jaaye
Khamooshī ke labon par ik girānī hai

Suno ‘Ishaq’ kaho tum ik ghazal aisī
Ye saara Chowk sukhan kī tarjumānī hai

Translation

A quiet trace still lingers on the course of the wind;
Every threshold tells a story of its own.

The houses have taken on new forms and colours now,
Yet on the threshold, the sound of footsteps is ancient.

Let the world rush past in its haste;
Pause and observe: in measured verse there is a truer flow.

It is not required that every thought be given voice;
Upon the lips of silence rests a solemn gravity.

Listen, O Ishaq, recite a ghazal of such grace
That all of Chowk becomes an expression of verse.
