SHORT STORIES

It all began during a heavy monsoon rain in Fort Kochi.

Aadi sat by the window of ‘Café Nostalgia,’ a cozy spot filled with the warm aroma of old books and fresh coffee. He was an artist. Looking out at the pouring rain, sipping his hot black tea, he was busy sketching something into his sketchbook.
That was when Diya rushed into the café, folding her wet umbrella. She was a writer, holding a few handwritten pages of her upcoming novel tightly against her chest. In the crowded café, only one seat remained vacant—the chair right in front of Aadi.
"May I sit here?" she asked.
Aadi nodded with a gentle smile. Both of them retreated into their own worlds. Aadi sketched the sea and the rain outside with his pencil, while Diya hastily jotted down words in her journal. But fate had a different plan.
When Diya left in a hurry after receiving a phone call, she accidentally left behind a handwritten sheet from her journal. Written on it were the words: "Some people are like the rain—you never know when they will arrive, but once they do, they bring a soothing calm to your soul."
Aadi picked up the paper. Right below her words, he drew a beautiful pencil sketch of Diya as she sat in the café. The next day, he waited for her at the exact same time.
When she arrived, he handed the paper back to her. Seeing her own words paired with the gorgeous illustration, Diya’s eyes widened in awe."This... is even more beautiful than I imagined!" she said.
"Your words were what brought it to life," Aadi replied softly.
That moment sparked a deep connection between them. They talked for hours—about the rain, about art, and about their dreams. Through his drawings, Aadi fell in love with Diya’s words, and through her writing, Diya fell in love with Aadi’s art.
Their love grew during evening walks through the historic alleys of Fort Kochi and while floating paper boats by the shore. Without ever uttering the words "I love you," they had already given their hearts to each other.
One evening, under a clear sky after the rain had stopped at the beach, Aadi gifted Diya a brand-new sketchbook. On the very first page, below a drawing of the two of them together, he had written a message just for her :"I don't wish to be the hero in your stories... but I want to be the one who paints the pictures of your life. Forever..."
Tears welled up in Diya’s eyes as she wrapped her arms around him. With the sea and the rain as their witnesses, two souls became one...
